About
I think of art not as a single practice, but as several interlocking ones. Landscapes are inseparable from structures, yet the map is not the terrain, the blue prints are not the building. Several worlds sit ontop of each other, waiting to be found and lived in. I do my best to see the world as a child sees a rock picked up. The feeling of solidity in my hand, the bugs crawling away underneath, the scent of dirt and moss. And the potential tool this rock could be. I’ve been in construction for most of my life even if I didn’t know it. From lego’s to Modular buildings I’ve always been fascinated with the bringing forth of a thing. Yet a building is nothing without the people who inhabit it, a painting is nothing until it is looked upon. A song doesn’t truly exist until it is heard. Communication is the root and rhizome of all we do.
I’ve also been in management for longer than I care to admit to. The art of moving people towards a common goal, or let’s face it, the goal of the biggest stakeholder, can be a joy unto itself. Humanity is a messy business and bringing order out of chaos can feel good. Managing people is lot like finger painting, you have to get a little dirty to understand.
As an artist and an employee, I strive for honesty and clarity. The first job is to understand the vision and needs, of either the piece or the client. We then find the correct medium and move on. Art can be a solitary endeavor but the moments of collaboration are priceless. Synergy and serving the project are the quickest path to fulfillment .
